California  squid (Doryteuthis opalescens) is a small cephalopod found in the Eastern Pacific, ranging from Baja California, Mexico to southeastern Alaska. It is most abundant between Punta Eugenia in Baja California and Monterey Bay, California. They live in the water column from the surface to depths of about 800 m (2,600 ft).

Market squid are fast-growing with a short lifespan of 6 to 9 months. They reach up to about 30 cm (1 foot) in total length, including arms.They spawn year-round and die shortly after reproducing, so the entire population replaces itself annually. Their iridescent coloration ranges from milky white to purple and can change in response to environmental conditions.

The California market squid fishery is one of the largest in California by landings. Fishermen operate at night, using bright lights to attract spawning squid to the surface, where they are harvested with purse seines and scoop nets. In 2024, U.S. commercial landings totaled approximately 127 million pounds, valued at about $68 million. Market squid are commonly sold as calamari and are also an important bait source for recreational fisheries.
